Stand Out in Job Applications with Your Resume

When it comes to job applications, your resume is your first impression. It needs to capture attention quickly, both from hiring managers and the increasingly prevalent Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). No recruiter or hiring manager wants a box of puzzles that needs assembling!

Here are some key strategies to make your resume stand out:

1. Keep It to One Page

Recruiters often spend just a few seconds scanning each resume. A one-page resume is more likely to be read in full and forces you to focus on your most impressive and relevant achievements.

This format is especially important for those early in their careers (1-10yrs).

It is unnecessary to give details of every job you've ever had.

Focus on your most recent and relevant roles. Use bullet points to highlight key accomplishments and metrics.

2. Include and Customize Your LinkedIn URL

Your LinkedIn profile can provide a deeper insight into your professional history and personality. Customize your LinkedIn URL to make it professional and easy to remember.

Instead of a generic URL like linkedin.com/in/john-doe-123456789hhkl;// , create a custom URL such as linkedin.com/in/johndoe.

3. Highlight Projects and Impacts, Not Job Descriptions

Rather than listing job duties, focus on specific projects you've completed and the impact they had. Use quantifiable results to demonstrate your contributions.

Examples below;

  • Developed a customer feedback system that increased customer satisfaction scores by 20%.

  • Led a team of 5 to redesign the company website, resulting in a 30% increase in traffic.

4. No Home Address or Graduation Dates

To avoid potential discrimination and maintain privacy, omit your home address and graduation dates.

Focus on your skills and experiences instead.

5. Include Industry Keywords

ATS systems often screen resumes for specific keywords. Tailor your resume to include terms and phrases common in your industry.

If you're applying for a marketing role, include keywords like "SEO," "content marketing," "lead generation," and "analytics."

For a product role, include keywords like A/B testing, user interviews, product roadmap creation etc.

6. Use a Professional Summary

A concise professional summary at the top of your resume can quickly convey your value proposition.

"Strategic and data-driven product professional with 5+ years of experience in product management, specializing in product development, stakeholder management, and executive communication."

7. Showcase Relevant Certifications and Skills

Highlight certifications and skills that are directly relevant to the job you're applying for. This can set you apart from other candidates who might have similar work experience but lack specific qualifications.

If applying for a product role, include certifications like Product Management course or Bootcamp, MS Suite, Jira. Mention skills like proficiency deck building and presentation, SWOT/Competitor analysis, success metrics identification and tracking.

Standing out in the job application process requires a strategic approach to resume writing. Using the above tips you can create a compelling resume that catches the attention of both ATS and hiring managers.

Wishing you the very best of luck!
